Visual Search in Microscopy Implies High-Level Cognition

چکیده
Analysis of visual search data suggests that the use of the microscope in the study of microanatomy is a high-level visuocognitive skill. Although the process of interpreting a microscope slide begins with perception and recognition, it quite often incorporates recall of anatomical knowledge and reasoning about the slide in the context of anatomy. Due to the system of cognitive processes in which slide interpretation takes place, patterns of visual search do not strongly differentiate better from poorer performers in general or for particular slide im-

متن کاملVisual Cognition in Microscopy
We can learn a great deal about cognition through the study of visual information systems – systems in which a domain of visual information is used to explore a separate target domain (e.g., telescope images used to explore astronomy). This study examined a real world task, microscope slide interpretation, in a complex visual domain, histology. Histology is a fundamental course in biology and m...
متن کاملVisual Awareness and Visuomotor Action
Recent work in "embodied, embedded" cognitive science links mental contents to largescale distributed effects: dynamic patterns implicating elements of (what are traditionally seen as) sensing, reasoning and acting. Central to this approach is an idea of biological cognition as profoundly "action-oriented" geared not to the creation of rich, passive inner models of the world, but to the cheap a...
متن کامل5-HT3 antagonist for cognition improvement in schizophrenia: a double blind, placebo-controlled trial
Introduction: Patients with schizophrenia characteristically exhibit cognitive deficits. The level of cognitive impairment is found to predict the functional outcome of the illness more strongly than the severity of positive or negative symptoms. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of ondansetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist as an adjuvant agent in the treatment of chronic...
متن کاملPerceptually Induced Distortions in Cognitive Maps
Cities on a map that are directly connected by a route are judged closer than unconnected cities. This route effect has been attributed to memory distortions induced by the integration of map information with high-level knowledge about implications of route connections. However, depicted routes also connect cities visually, thereby creating a single visual object—which implies a perceptual basi...
